Butte Montana Tours Frequently Asked Questions

What types of guided tours are available in Butte?

Our local operators offer a diverse selection of excursions. You can browse the active tour cards above to book everything from trolley tours and subterranean mining experiences to historic red-light district adventures, evening ghost walks, and scenic mountain shuttles.

How long do the typical tours last?

Duration depends entirely on the experience you select from our listings. Shorter historic city overviews like the Butte Trolley Tour generally run about 90 minutes, whereas deeper excursions, such as the journey up the Continental Divide to Our Lady of the Rockies typically require 2.5 to 3 hours.

Can I explore a real underground mine during a tour?

Yes, Butte’s deep mining heritage is a major attraction. The World Museum of Mining offers fully guided underground tours that take you 100 feet down into an actual historic mine shaft, giving you a firsthand look at what life was like for the miners on the “Richest Hill on Earth.”

Are there any ghost tours or haunted history walks?

Butte has a wild, gritty past, which naturally comes with a few ghost stories. Local operators run specialized evening ghost tours and haunted history walks that explore historic uptown structures, old theater spaces, and underground tunnels; check the listings on this page for current schedules and availability.

How do I visit the Our Lady of the Rockies statue?

Because the 90-foot monument sits on private property high atop the Continental Divide, it cannot be accessed by private vehicles. To see it up close, you must book an official guided shuttle tour, which departs regularly from town during the summer and early autumn months.

Are tours in Butte family-friendly?

Most of the tour listings on our page are excellent for all ages. Kids especially love riding the Butte Trolley and exploring the replica 1890s mine town “Hell Roarin’ Gulch”  at the World Museum of Mining, though we recommend checking individual tour card details for any specific age or physical restrictions on underground or evening ghost walks. For example, the minimum age for the underground tour at the World Museum of Mining is 5 years old.

What should I wear or bring on a Butte tour?

Montana weather is notoriously unpredictable and can shift rapidly. We highly recommend dressing in layers, wearing sturdy closed-toe walking shoes, and bringing along a jacket, especially for underground mine tours or evening walks where temperatures drop significantly. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle.

Do I need to book my tour in advance?

Yes. We strongly encourage booking ahead as popular excursions fill up fast, especially during peak summer travel and festival season. You can use the direct links on our tour cards above to visit the individual tour websites for real-time availability and to secure your reservations.

What is there to do in Butte after my tour wraps up?

Uptown Butte is part of one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country, and it’s incredibly walkable. Stroll streets lined with preserved late-1800s and early-1900s architecture. When you’re ready for a break, Butte’s local shops, acclaimed restaurants, and seasonal music and cultural festivals are all within easy reach. And if you want to stay right in Uptown Butte, there are two historic hotels to choose from, the Miners Hotel or the Hotel Finlen.
